Tragedy in Congo: Over 200 Dead in Rubaya Coltan Mine Collapse
More than 200 people have died after a collapse at the Rubaya coltan mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials said. The disaster occurred Wednesday, with victims including miners, children, and market vendors. Around 20 survivors are receiving medical care for serious injuries.
Rubaya, which produces roughly 15% of the world’s coltan—a key component in smartphones, computers, aerospace, and gas turbines—has been under the control of the AFC/M23 rebel group since 2024. Locals work manually in dangerous conditions for just a few dollars per day.
Officials attribute the collapse to fragile ground during the rainy season. The United Nations has accused the rebel group of exploiting the mine to fund its insurgency, allegations Rwanda denies.
