Gunmen Kill 11 in Mass Shooting at Soccer Field in Central Mexico
Jan. 26 (UPI) — At least 11 people were killed and 12 others wounded after gunmen opened fire on a crowded soccer field in central Mexico on Sunday, according to authorities.
The attack took place around 5:20 p.m. local time in the Loma de Flores neighborhood of Salamanca, shortly after a soccer match had ended. Local media reported that approximately 300 people were present when assailants arrived in three vans and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd.
Ten victims died at the scene, while another later succumbed to injuries at a hospital, the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office confirmed.
State prosecutors have launched an investigation into the mass shooting.
Salamanca Mayor César Prieto said the attack reflects escalating violence by organized criminal groups attempting to undermine government authority.
“We are facing a very serious moment and a deep social breakdown,” Prieto said in a recorded message, calling on both the president and the state governor for support to help restore peace. He added that authorities will pursue those responsible.
