Meta Prepares to Test Paid Subscriptions for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp

Meta is preparing to test subscription-based versions of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, signaling that the era of completely free social media may be starting to shift.

While free access isn’t going away for now, Meta has confirmed that certain features and sharing controls could soon sit behind a paywall. The company hasn’t revealed exactly how these subscriptions will work, but early details suggest multiple premium options are on the table.

The plans were revealed during a conversation with TechCrunch, where Meta indicated that subscription models could roll out within the next few months. The move appears to be part of a broader effort to generate new revenue streams, potentially to fund further investment in artificial intelligence.

According to Meta, paid subscriptions would aim to “unlock more productivity and creativity,” with enhanced AI-powered tools included. Features such as AI-driven video generation are reportedly being explored, especially following Meta’s recent acquisition of the AI agent Manus.

Although pricing and package details remain undisclosed, Meta is keeping its options open. The company could introduce all-in-one bundles, individual platform subscriptions, or flexible mix-and-match plans tailored to user needs.

There is also uncertainty around user reaction. Locking previously free features behind a paywall could either push users toward subscriptions or trigger significant backlash. As TechCrunch notes, Meta does not appear committed to a single strategy just yet.

If the experiment proves successful and users show a willingness to pay, Meta’s move could set a precedent—encouraging other social media platforms to follow the same path.
