Ex-Boxing Star John Murray Jailed Over Violent Attack on Two Women
A former British and European lightweight boxing champion has been jailed after assaulting two women, including punching one in the face during a dispute over a blocked driveway.
John Murray, 41, from Levenshulme, Manchester, retired from professional boxing in 2014 after a successful career that included bouts against Anthony Crolla and an appearance on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs Oscar De La Hoya fight in Las Vegas in 2007.
Minshull Street Crown Court heard that Murray was working as a delivery driver in 2023 when the incident occurred. On January 20, he launched an unprovoked attack on a woman following an argument after he was accused of blocking her driveway.
The victim had her two children in the back of her car when Murray punched her in the face. Prosecutor Eleanor Myers told the court that the children were heard screaming, “Get off my mum,” as the woman’s partner rushed to help.
Murray struck the woman again before driving away, reportedly colliding with her car as he left. The victim suffered a broken nose and later told the court the attack had a lasting impact on her life.
“This changed me as a person,” she said in a victim statement. “I don’t feel like the same person anymore. I can’t leave the house on my own.”
