Pakistan, Iran Discuss Regional Issues After UNHRC Vote
ISLAMABAD:
Iran has expressed appreciation to Pakistan for its strong backing at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), particularly for opposing a resolution critical of Tehran’s human rights record, according to Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
The acknowledgement came during a phone call between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. Dar is currently on an official visit to Dubai.
During the conversation, the two diplomats reviewed key regional and international developments. Foreign Minister Araghchi specifically thanked Pakistan for calling for a vote at the UNHRC in Geneva and for voting against the resolution concerning Iran.
On Friday, the UNHRC adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for two years, along with a one-year extension for the Special Rapporteur on Iran’s human rights situation, following a special session.
Pakistan, China, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Cuba, and Vietnam voted against the resolution.
The measure calls for an urgent investigation into alleged human rights violations linked to nationwide protests that began on December 28, including potential legal proceedings related to the findings of the Fact-Finding Mission.
